Sub-tasks

Sub-tasks break a ticket into smaller, trackable steps. Support, Consulting, and Dev tickets can have sub-tasks; Epic projects do not.

Creating Sub-tasks

(Requires a role with the sub-task permission — e.g. Support Member or Consulting/Dev Lead/Member.)

  1. Open a ticket and use the sub-task section.
  2. Add a title, description, priority, assignee, tags, and optional due date.
  3. Assigning a sub-task sets its status and notifies the assignee.

Tickets that have sub-tasks are flagged with an indicator in ticket lists, so you can tell at a glance which ones are broken down.

Scheduling and effort

Sub-tasks carry both a plan and a record of what happened:

FieldSet by
Planned start / endYou, when scheduling the work
Estimated start / end, estimated hoursYou, when sizing it
Actual startSet automatically when the sub-task moves to In Progress
Actual endSet automatically when it's marked Completed
Actual hours spentYou, as the work is done

The actual timestamps are stamped by the status transition, so the record reflects what really happened rather than what someone remembered to type.

Sub-task Statuses

StatusMeaning
OPENCreated, unstarted
ASSIGNEDHas an assignee
IN_PROGRESSBeing worked on
COMPLETEDDone
REOPENEDWas completed, re-opened

Tags

Sub-tasks support the same tag system as tickets — apply tags to categorize and filter.

Details, Comments & Worklog

Open a sub-task to reach its detail panel:

  • Comment thread with @mentions, replies, and reactions (see Comments)
  • Attachments (see Attachments)
  • Worklog tab — log a work-log entry against the sub-task specifically
  • Followers — subscribe someone to this sub-task alone
  • Activity log

Commenting on an open sub-task you didn't create assigns it to you, unless you're a Viewer — see auto-assign.

Sub-tasks are included in Global Search (Ctrl+K); selecting one opens its parent ticket with the sub-task in focus.

You can also jump straight to one by its display ID — EMA-15.2 or just 15.2 finds sub-task 2 of ticket 15. See Searching by ID.
